New System from Squirrel Results in 75 Percent Reduction in Errors for Brooklyn Seafood, Steak and Oyster House

When The Brooklyn Seafood, Steak & Oyster House opened for business over seventeen years ago, their point of sale system was a PLU (price look-up) based system.

From the start, the system was outdated and required staff members to memorize long lists of PLU codes, resulting in keying errors.
Their credit card processing solution was not integrated with the POS and resulted in long lines for the payment processing terminals because servers were required to settle on the same terminal at which they authorized the transaction versus being able to settle on any terminal on the system.  After fifteen years, The Brooklyn implemented its first upgrade to the the system, but it took another two years before management decided to replace their antiquated system with SquirrelOne.

General Manager Rick Cicco said, “Our old system only provided a single line review.  There was no way to review the entire order before sending it off to the kitchen or bar.  This caused a lot of keying errors.  Since we implemented SquirrelOne, this type of error has been reduced by 75 percent.”  Cicco also said that speed of service has also improved.  “Not having to enter a four digit code for each item, addon and modifier has resulted in a 50-75 percent reduction in the time it takes to enter a single order.”

A touchscreen based system, SquirrelOne leads servers through the order process through on-screen prompts and ensures that orders are modified correctly and completely through pop-up windows that force servers to enter all required modifiers that apply to an item in the correct order for production.  Rick Cicco said, “SquirrelOne is very intuitive. Servers required very little training and adapted quickly to the new system.”

Integrated payment card processing through SquirrelOne and Southern Datacomm to Vital has also resulted in a huge improvement in guest service.  As well as providing compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards, the integration with Southern Datacomm makes it possible for servers to settle payment card transactions from any terminal in the restaurant thus reducing server line-ups for payment terminals.  The Brooklyn plans to implement an integrated gift card solution with SquirrelOne in the near future.

“It’s all about providing outstanding guest service,” said Cicco.  “The impact of the time and error reductions that we have realized goes straight to the bottom line.”
