InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will open its first Hotel Indigo® in Asia Pacific in May 2010 at Shiliupu Dock at the Southern end of The Bund in Shanghai.

IHG’s first lifestyle boutique hotel brand in the region, Hotel Indigo offers guests a less formal and more individual hotel experience paired with the peace of mind, service quality and Priority Club® Rewards benefits they get from staying at an IHG property. The brand pioneers a new concept for the company, targeting upscale travelers who seek a more authentic experience that incorporates local historic, cultural and natural elements.  The same high standards expected from IHG are exercised, but delivered within a more intimate service culture and environment that focuses on making guests feel at home.

“The opening of our first Hotel Indigo property in Asia Pacific marks an exciting milestone in the brand’s expansion.  Boutique properties are becoming increasingly popular within the region, but there is an inconsistency in the standards of the boutique offerings available.  We therefore see a huge opportunity for Hotel Indigo, as we can provide the reassurance and consistent quality that comes from staying at an IHG property, while still providing guests with a stylish, unique and interestingly different hotel experience every time.  For owners too, it provides an attractive proposition to co-create a distinct property that benefits from a high returns model,” said Keith Barr, managing director, IHG Greater China.

IHG says that it has signed a management contract with Shanghai Huangpu River Banks Asset Management Company and will bring its first lifestyle brand — Hotel Indigo — to the Bund in Shanghai.

The Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund will be designed by HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates. Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund will be on a riverfront site along the Huangpu River. The 180-room hotel is scheduled to open in 2010, and will sit on Shiliu Pu (Pier 16) which, from 1821 to 1850, was Shanghai’s focal point for shipping and trading activity. The wharf was outside the Baodaimen gate of the old wall that surrounded the city at that time. Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund will be one of the first hotels located along the riverfront to offer unobstructed views of several famous and historical sites.

Established in 2004 in the United States, Hotel Indigo has 25 hotels already open and more than 58 in the pipeline globally.  Most significantly in 2008, it opened Hotel Indigo London Paddington in the United Kingdom, its first property outside of the United States, a new flagship property in San Diego last year, and recently signed to open Hotel Indigo Hong Kong QRE in 2012, its first property in Hong Kong.

All Hotel Indigo properties are completely individual by design, reflecting not only the city they reside in but the history and energy of their local neighborhood.  Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund is no exception.

“With its unique location on the river front and focus on local creativity and bespoke design, Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund will offer visitors to Shanghai something quite different.  The hotel has a distinct character; we wanted to move away from simply replicating the ambience of 1930’s Shanghai and instead create a more varied environment that represents the diversity and very best of old and new Shanghai,” said Bruce Ryde, general manager of the hotel.

All rooms feature complimentary Wi-Fi, Internet telephone (to allow for low-cost international calls), a 42-inch flat-screen TV with DVD, a Bose music sound system, iron and ironing board, a laptop safe, a fully stocked minibar complete with locally sourced luxuries, among many other services.

Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund offers a full compliment of business services and contemporary meeting/conference rooms equipped with the latest technology.

Hotel Indigo® was launched in North America in 2004 and in Asia Pacific in 2008.  Hotel Indigo is quickly expanding across the globe, with 28 hotels now open and more than 59 in the pipeline.  In 2008, Hotel Indigo London Paddington opened as the first Hotel Indigo in Europe.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) [LON:IHG, NYSE:IHG (ADRs)] is one of the world’s largest hotel groups by number of rooms.
