During the American Hotel & Lodging Association Inaugural Gala, industry leaders gathered to welcome incoming chair John Campbell, general manager of La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Inc., and toast the association’s year-long centennial celebration (1910-2010).

Campbell chose the Marriott Marquis for his inaugural dinner because he shares an important history with the property – he was part of a group of employees who opened the hotel 25 years ago.  “The last 25 years has brought warp speed changes in technology, changes in world politics, changes in economic circumstances,” said Campbell.  “But even with all of the change, certain things remain the same.”

“One thing that doesn’t change in the hospitality industry is that it continues to be an industry that offers opportunity to everyone,” said Campbell.  “I am living proof that you can go from being a bouncer to doing inventory at a new hotel to working in a dream job as long as you are willing to flow with the changes.  Being flexible and being adaptable is key, especially in this industry and especially in these times.” 

And he credited his opportunities in the industry to a group of mentors. “Mentorship is a win for both parties,” said Campbell.  “If you are a mentee now, remember that one day, you will be a mentor.  And if you are a mentor today, remember there is a lot to be learned from the younger generation.”

“The ability to adapt and stay current is something AH&LA has thrived upon for 100-plus years,” said Campbell.  "Whether you work for the biggest hotel company in the world or a small, independent property like the one I work for, AH&LA provides the resources we all need to stay competitive, including a big focus on education, networking opportunities, and educating lawmakers on issues important to our businesses.”

Campbell has served on AH&LA’s board of directors for numerous years and received the prestigious AH&LA Lawson A. Odde Award for his outstanding contributions by a board member.  He has chaired the association’s audit and certification committee and is a current member of the governmental affairs and resort committees. 

Campbell has served as general manager of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Resort for 16 years, which also includes five properties including the 98-room La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the 128-room La Jolla Shores Hotel (formerly the Sea Lodge Hotel), the landmark Marine Room restaurant, and two commercial properties. 

Prior to joining La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, Inc., Campbell spent seven years as director of food and beverage at the 1,355-room San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.  His hospitality career began in 1981 as a food and beverage director at the Anaheim Marriott.  In 1985, he was appointed opening director of food and beverage at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills, Calif., before transferring to San Diego in that role to oversee the acquisition and expansion of the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.  Campbell also spent eight years with Bobby McGee's Conglomeration, a chain of freestanding theme restaurants in the Southwest.

Campbell is a past president of the California Hotel & Lodging Association and of the California Restaurant Association San Diego.  He is also a past member of the board of directors of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau and former director of the San Diego Hotel & Motel Association.  Campbell graduated from the University of Arizona where he received a bachelor of science degree in business finance.

Other 2011 AH&LA officers include Vice Chair Nancy Johnson, executive vice president/chief development officer, Carlson Hotels Worldwide; Secretary/Treasurer Ron Vlasic, regional vice president of hotels, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants; and Immediate Past Chair David Kong, president/CEO of Best Western International.  These hoteliers are led by AH&LA President/CEO Joseph A. McInerney, CHA.
