iBAHN’s New Model for Hotel Guest Entertainment Platform Validated by Recent News

iBAHN, a global leader in IP television and broadband wireless solutions for the hospitality, convention and meeting industries, responded to recent news about a major hospitality brand removing adult content from its hotels – immediately for new rooms, and over the next few years for existing properties.

Recent independent and proprietary research studies indicate that less than four percent of hotel guests currently purchase content – whether adult fare or Hollywood movies – through hotels’ video on-demand (VoD) systems. Moreover, this decline in VoD usage has been tracked over the past several years, and all predictions support its continued decline.  In 2010, a study by YPartnership showed that 67 percent of business travelers surveyed had downloaded music onto their laptop, while 60 percent had downloaded video – clearly indicating that travelers intend to make sure they have access to their desired content while traveling.

“The hospitality industry has experienced a shift away from both devices and content supplied by the hotel – consider the change in revenue from telephone systems, as travelers’ use their own mobile devices for communication,” said David W. Garrison, iBAHN’s chief executive officer. “Travelers increasingly expect the hospitality technology experience to at least equal their home Internet experience – and that means HD programming and Internet access on television, riding on an IPTV platform.

With nearly two billion Internet users worldwide – and a 14 percent year-over-year growth in Internet users – hotels face increasing challenges with providing the bandwidth required to support the growth in audio and video downloads.  In the USA alone, 84 percent of Internet users have watched video online, and all indications are that this number will continue to grow.
