Don Glassie, 76, Founder of Atlantic Stars Hospitality, Has Passed Away

Atlantic Stars Hospitality is saddened to announce that its company founder, Newport, R.I.-based entrepreneur Donelson (Don) C. Glassie, Jr., died in February after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Glassie, 76, was head of a growing business that includes hotels, inns, restaurants and cruise vessels operating in New England, New York, Miami Beach and the Caribbean. The company's most recent projects were set in Manhattan and included transforming a 100-year-old Murray Hill building into the 143-room Park South Hotel and constructing the 177-room Strand Hotel, which opened in 2009.

A senior management team representing 60 years of combined experience continues to oversee the family-owned operation. The team consists of: Tom Glassie, Glassie's son, whose experience ranges from managing properties to national sales and marketing; Paul Doucette, Glassie's son-in-law, who has been involved with finance and administration for the last eight years; and John Taft, a close associate who directed the company's renovation and construction projects.

"Don was one of a kind, in business and life," Tom Glassie said in a statement. "Everyone in the company is going to miss him greatly.  I had the honor of working alongside my father for 18 years and learned the industry through his leadership.  Our team will continue the management course we chartered together and hold true to the spirit of an intimate, service-oriented hospitality company."

As a resident developer in Newport during the 1970s, Glassie acquired a fascination with the lodging business. This led to Atlantic Stars' development and operation of the Yankee Peddler, Jailhouse and Harborside Inns in Newport, which continues today. During the 1980s and 90s, the management team undertook the renovation and operation of five hotels in the historic Art Deco district of Miami Beach along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue.  Most notable are the Avalon Hotel, A Fish Called Avalon restaurant and the South Seas Hotel, which are also still operated by the company.

In Manhattan, Atlantic Stars Hospitality also developed and manages the popular Top of the Strand rooftop bar and the newly opened ground-floor Strand Bistro.  In addition, the company operates the Black Duck restaurant just off Park Avenue.
