Geneva Rinehart

Our friend and colleague, Carol Verret died on December 5, 2012. Carol was 63 and died peacefully after a hard-fought, 8-year battle with breast cancer. Carol is survived by her family, her husband Bill, one child and three grandchildren that she loved talking about.


Carol had an infectiously positive attitude; she was insightful in her writing and passionate about marketing and the hospitality industry. She loved and embraced the hospitality industry and worked to keep improving it through the Carol Verret and Associates consulting firm. She was also an avid blogger on hotel sales and revenue management.

I first met Carol more than a decade ago when I approached her after reading one of her articles on Hotel-Online. I asked her why she didn’t write for us? She said quickly, because you haven't asked me yet. So I asked and Carol had been a regular columnist and contributor for Hospitality Upgrade ever since. We have published 23 articles from her in her area of expertise since 2003. Her expertise included revenue management, sales, marketing and training.

One of our readers wrote to us about Carol’s last column prior to her death. Area Assistant General Manager at LQ Management Hicham Jaddoud said, “I was going through the Summer 2012 copy (of Hospitality Upgrade) today and loved one of the articles: ‘Customers Are Looking for an Experience, Not Just a Room,’ by Carol Verret. I made copies for my employees and other hotel department heads.”

She also continued to contribute to Hotel-Online and the website's archive has more than 100 articles published by Carol dating back to the year 2000.  At least once a month I would correspond with her about business or upcoming columns or just on a personal note. She was so much fun to get on the phone for a real conversation. She had an inner smile that could cross hundreds of miles over the phone. And she was so very interesting; my last card from her was from her South African safari and included a picture of her feeding an elephant!

Last fall was the first issue that she missed a deadline in 10 years. When I called her to check in on her column she told me what she was facing, but as always she had a very positive attitude. She had beaten this before. She would fight hard to beat it again. 

There is a big hole in our issue and our hearts as we say good-bye to a friend, colleague, columnist and great industry resource. Thank you, Carol. We will miss you but we are so thankful for having shared some time with you.
