Siegel Sez

by: Rich  Siegel

A couple of weeks ago on my LinkedIn profile it was suggested that I should be congratulated for 27 years of promoting a better understanding of technology for the industry via Hospitality Upgrade and Siegel Sez via Hotel-Online. I was a little embarrassed how I seemed to get a million congrats from those in my network. I have learned a great deal over the years about technology, but like everybody we all want to know what is new and what is coming. Hopefully if you are reading this you are already a subscriber to Hospitality Upgrade (if not, please go to and you know our focus is on the hotel industry. Our spring issue which will be hitting your mailboxes any day now and includes a very special section on technology for the cruise industry. When cruise line CIOs join us at the CIO Summit we were always intrigued at how similar they are to hotels, but also how different they are. Those who think they are floating hotels are absolutely wrong at least when it comes to technology. When you read the Cruise Technology Section in our spring issue, you will see that the use of facial recognition is far ahead of hotels. Artificial intelligence will be used quite a bit differently then how hotels see it coming into play. And especially interesting is how cruise lines are connecting systems via integration platform as a service (iPaaS) which is going to open doors for many new vendors to address the needs of the cruise industry. Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) will create an explosion of bandwith and make it more affordable. There is even talk about the eventual move to the cloud, which the hotel industry has already embraced. I learned a great deal from our cruise section and we thank the execs from Royal Caribbean, Walt Disney, Norwegian, Carnival, MSC and the new Virgin Voyages coming from Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, for sharing their visions with us. If you are going to be at Seatrade Cruise Global in April in Miami, please look for us. ( We will be there distributing the spring issue of Hospitality Upgrade and hoping to get more feedback, a better understanding of the industry and the changes it is experiencing.

That second week of April is going to be a challenge for many. Seatrade in Miami, HT-Next in New Orleans and HITEC Europe in Mallorca, Spain – all these events are happening during the same week. I will be in Spain where HFTP has announced that the exhibit hall is sold out and pre-reg numbers for attendees is beyond its first two European events in Amsterdam. Divide and conquer, that is our goal for the first week in April. I hope we will see you somewhere.

Our next Siegel Sez will have a pleasant surprise coming. We love when those who live in the technology world share their thoughts and knowledge of the industry with us. That is all I am going to say at this point. Here now is the latest technology happenings in the industry. Good luck in your March Madness pool. As long as anybody but Duke wins, I will be happy. I gave up ever trying to win a pool, but it is fun to participate. I will see you at the end with this week’s attempt at you-know-what.

Kenny, a city boy, moved to the country and purchased a car from a farmer for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the car the following day. The next morning, the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry, son, but I have some bad news. The car broke down."
"OK, well, just return my money to me," Kenny said.
"Sorry, can't do that," said the farmer. "I already spent it."
"OK then, just unload the car," said Kenny.
"Whatcha gonna do with it?" asked the farmer.
"I'm going to raffle it off," Kenny replied.
"You can't raffle off a broken-down car!" the farmer exclaimed.
"Of course I can," replied Kenny. "Watch me. I just won't tell anybody it doesn't work."
A few weeks later, the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "So, what happened with the car?"
"I raffled it off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a profit of $898.00," explained Kenny.
"Didn't anyone complain?" inquired the farmer.
Kenny proudly replied, "Just the guy who won. So, I gave him his two dollars back."
