Siegel Sez

When you read Ron Hardin’s opening to the technology news he will highlight some milestones by both industry folks and HFTP. He also mentioned that he was unable to attend the HFTP Annual Conference this year.  I did attend the Annual Conference and it was held in my favorite small city, Louisville, Kentucky. No other association connects people better than HFTP, especially when it comes to the financial types that are the overwhelming attendees at this conference. I have been attending for many years and just love the closeness the people have with each other. Those who are new to the industry are welcomed with open arms. I would guess that 80 percent of those attending had never been to Louisville before, but I am also guessing that probably a 100 percent loved the city. Of course, it is HFTP so next year it will be back in Orlando which always draws the largest crowd. The conference had a great deal of interesting sessions and they included many with a focus on technology. I really enjoyed a session technology consultant James Lingle led regarding the challenges of a small IT staff as technology keeps growing in the business but IT support doesn’t. I noticed lots and lots of those in the room shaking their heads in agreement with many of the points he brought up. I hope we can get him to do his session at HITEC in Minneapolis next year. I know it will be a hit. Scot Campbell took over as the president of HFTP and when he addressed the attendees he thanked me for “discovering” him when he was at MGM Resorts many years ago. Thank you for the shout out, Scot. Many of the old timers might remember when he was interviewed in Hospitality Upgrade and then later that year he and I did what has been often recognized as the best-ever closing session at HITEC because I made him dress up as a woman. He was laughing while sharing that memory. Yes, those were the days. There is still video of the session floating around if you would like to see it drop a note to me at rich@hospitalityupgrade.com.

Conference season continues as next week I will be at one of my favorite users’ conferences, the HUG event for Springer-Miller Systems. To my knowledge this is the only industry user group run by the users, not the vendor. It makes for a unique event that I am always honored to be invited to. Plus, I have never been to the Snowbird Resort in Utah though they have been loyal subscribers to Hospitality Upgrade since our beginning. I am finally getting my chance, but I hope I don’t get snowed in. After SMS HUG it is off to New York City and HX and then HITEC Dubai. As far as events, that will be it for me this year. Of course, I say that now but who can be sure what tomorrow brings.

Here now is the real reason we are here, the latest technology happenings in the industry. I will see you at the end with this week’s attempt at you-know-what. For all the horse followers of Hoboe, he should be running on Fri., Nov. 9 at Aqueduct Race Track in New York which is five minutes from JFK airport. If you are attending HX and are arriving early Friday morning or live in the NYC area let me know and you can share in his attempt to win again. Yes, Hoboe has quite a few fans in the hotel industry and we are grateful for that. Go Hoboe!

Introduction

by: Ron  Hardin

Late October means my wedding anniversary (27th this year), Halloween, and HFTP Annual Convention.  I was unable to attend the HFTP Annual Convention in Louisville this year but wanted to give a big shout-out to incoming HFTP Global President Scot Campbell, CHTP, CTO North American Concerts at Live Nation Entertainment, and the new HFTP Global Board of Directors.  Also, to Frank Wolfe, CEO of HFTP, and the entire HFTP staff.  I’m sure it was a smashing success, as always.  Annual awards and recognitions are handed out at the Annual Convention, and I would like to recognize some of the technology-related recipients:

  • 2018 CHTP of the Year: Sean Van Dyke, CHTP, IT Manager at the St Julien Hotel and Spa;

  • 2018 Technology Hall of Fame Inductees: Tammy Farley, co-founder and president of The Rainmaker Group; Jing Zhu, founder and chairperson of the China Hospitality Technology Alliance (CHTA);

  • 2018 President's Award: Christopher Begley, CHTP, IT Manager at Hotel Nikko San Francisco;

  • 2018 Paragon Award: Anna McFarland, CPA, CFE, CHAE, CHTP, HFTP Past-President and independent global hospitality consultant.

Another HFTP-related news item that caught my eye this week was the announcement that HFTP has acquired the copyright to the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI).  This is kind of a big deal.  HFTP has been associated with the Uniform System of Accounts since its inception.  The original 1925 standardized guide for hotel accounting was drafted and published by the Hotel Accountants Association of New York.  In the years that followed, the New York association worked together with other state and regional groups to eventually form the National Association of Hotel Accountants in 1952.  That organization grew and, after a few name changes and the inclusion of technology professionals in the membership charter, eventually became HFTP.  According to Wolfe, "The histories of the USALI and HFTP are intertwined, and I am confident HFTP as steward to the financial resource will maintain the USALI's relevance to the industry."  Another win for the home team!  If you’re not a member of HFTP yet, join.  If you are in a hospitality financial or technology leadership position, support HFTP membership, certification and continuing professional education.  That is all.

You-Know-What

And now for you-know-what …  A few points to ponder ...

A man was mowing his lawn when he heard his neighbor, come out of her house. She opened her mailbox, looked inside and slammed it shut. She stomped her foot and went back inside.

The man thought ''how weird.''

A few minutes passed and sure enough, the woman came out of her house again, checked her mail box, stamped her foot and went back inside. The man stopped mowing and checked her mailbox to see what was so wrong with it. After seeing nothing, he went back to mowing just shrugging his shoulders.

As soon as he heard her coming out again, he shut off his mowing machine and went up to her. ''What in the world are you doing, coming out here every five minutes?''

The woman looked up at the man and said, ''Well, you see, there's this little voice in my house that keeps on saying, 'You've got mail,' but when I come out here to check, I don't have any.''
