Siegel Sez

This is our last Siegel Sez of the year, and what a year it’s been! I hope you all read Doug Rice’s article and his look back at industry technology in 2022. We will take a deep look back at 2022 after the first of the year, but right now it’s all about getting 2022 behind us. The one crazy thing that happened this year (that I need to mention once more) was AHLA announcing their new Hospitality Show. It’s scheduled for the same 2023 dates as HITEC and will have technology included. I was at HT-NEXT last week and you would not believe how many people came up to me asking for my thoughts.

I expect there will be a lot more conversations as we are now in the six-month window before both shows. It’s interesting that HFTP just announced the dates and locations of the next two HITECs after Toronto in 2023. It will be held in Charlotte in 2024 and Indianapolis in 2025. I think they stole Indianapolis from our plans … just kidding, I think. I did get to spend a few minutes at HT-NEXT with Kevin Carey the COO and EVP at AHLA and it was a positive conversation that will be continued. Yes, life goes on and the craziness will soon be behind us. It was nice that it was shared that The Hospitality Show will never again conflict with HITEC. That’s one less thing to worry about.

Many industries are struggling with staffing, but possibly none more than the hospitality industry. Doug Rice, in his Definitely Doug column that follows, looks at how technology can address staffing shortages. I encourage you to read the part regarding the college intern and his comments about meaningful jobs. The industry must stop hesitating to invest in technology, causing it to lag behind other industries. With that said, there has been lots of progress, but we still have a way to go. We thank Doug for his thoughts and suggestions on how technology can address staffing issues.

One thing we can expect next year regarding events is that all shows will probably have high attendance. From our CIO Summit and then the Lodging Conference in September, right through last week’s HT-NEXT, everybody wants to meet face to face again. I know this is going to continue in 2023. I will be at CES in Las Vegas January 5-8, and from what I hear the hotel industry will be well represented. If you have never been to CES and are into or curious about technology, you must attend. Many of the things there won’t be available for a few years or possibly ever, but it does get you thinking about the future. I can’t wait!

Hospitality Upgrade and Hotel Online thank you for being a part of what we do. Enjoy the holiday season and let’s all approach 2023 with lots of positive energy. There is great power in positive thinking! Happy Holidays and see you next year!

Technology to Attract and Retain Staff

This week’s topic will be a holiday-shortened but nevertheless important one. As an industry, we all know there is a labor challenge today. Some parts of the world have earned a temporary reprieve as travel demand has dropped, but others, notably the U.S. market, are still struggling to find staff. For most of the world, it remains a long-term problem.

There have been many articles and studies about how the pandemic, in combination with demographics, has changed the view that many (especially younger) workers have towards employers. Flexibility, work-life balance, good training, clear career paths, and the need to feel valued have never been more important.

Unemployment, at 3.7% in the U.S. in November, is close to its all-time low. Before the pandemic, the industry filled the gap to a significant extent with immigrant workers, but visa restrictions have reduced the available pool. Further, many hotel workers who were furloughed in 2020 have moved on in their careers and have said they are unlikely to come back to hotels – they like their new work situation better. Turnover in hotels remains astronomical.

Hotels need to rethink what they do to make themselves attractive as employers. While there are many aspects to this, technology can play an important role. I will summarize a few ideas here, many of which are available in the market today. Others may represent opportunities for vendors to build or improve.
