Within the past quarter, Meituan, China’s leading e-commerce platform for services, appointed SiteMinder as its online distribution partner. The appointment marked Meituan’s first partnership with a hotel distribution technology provider as the company looked to expand its hotel inventory beyond its home market of China.
On May 1, 2019, Meituan set an industry record by processing more than 2.8 million domestic hotel room nights in one day. Holding a recent market value of approximately $52 billion, its technology service platform has more than 410 million users. By partnering with SiteMinder, the e-commerce giant completed its hotel technology stack to attract international hotel markets, beginning with Southeast Asia.
For SiteMinder’s 35,000 hotel customers, the partnership with Meituan provides greater access than ever before to market their rooms to the lucrative Chinese travel market.
“As a rising international hotel reservation platform in China, Meituan will bring new energy to the market with its huge, young customer base. SiteMinder’s global presence, combined with its appeal to both large hotel chains and independent hotels, made it the perfect partner for us as we grow our international hotel supply and build on our multilevel technology service platform,” said Zhong Qiang, general manager of Meituan’s overseas accommodation department.
Berjaya Hotels & Resorts also engaged SiteMinder to take control of the increasing disparity between its online room rates. The chain, which offers travellers more than 3,000 rooms across the Asia Pacific and the U.K., adopted SiteMinder’s distribution technology to better influence and manage how its inventory was shared.
The move supported Berjaya Hotels & Resort’s marketing strategy to aggressively grow its online presence and achieve rate parity, where possible.
“The disparity issue is getting more and more serious. It’s become a trend,” said Irvine Loo, director of digital marketing at Berjaya Hotels & Resorts. “There will always be loopholes and, while we can’t be across every instance of a third-party compromising our distribution platforms, we want to act quickly when it does happen. We want to be able to tackle the issue effectively, at both the group and individual property level.”
For Loo, who oversees the chain-wide online marketing function for Berjaya Hotels & Resorts — which encompasses 18 properties from luxury to midscale brands in Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Japan and the U.K. — the greatest challenge was maintaining a price point that reflected the hotel group’s brands.
“Travelers today are used to getting the best offers and deals online, but it is important that our pricing reflects quality,” he said. “SiteMinder’s technology has made it easy to achieve exactly this. Bookings for Berjaya Hotels & Resorts are coming in faster than ever before, which means we need to be dynamic to drive revenue. My team could no longer afford to continue managing the extranets of our distribution channel partners separately, or to check the accuracy of our room rates with a credit card. I can now monitor and manage it all through SiteMinder, plus the integration of the platform with our property management system gives me comfort that it will not fail me.”
