Siegel Sez
by: Richard Siegel
The big news this week as reported on Hotel-Online was the acquisition of ZDirect by Travelclick. If half of what I hear is true I expect between now and the end of the year there will be a few more announcements but you can never be sure. Some make sense, some are just rumors but it does make for interesting conversations. These are interesting times in the hotel technology space. Of course a lot of these conversations happen at events and they are not always alcohol inspired. This is why I always encourage those in the industry to attend events; it is all about interacting with peers. Last week I was at the HFTP Annual Conference in Bellevue, Wash. I would like to meet the marketing types who decided to promote Hyatt Regency Bellevue on Seattle’s Eastside. It is a good ways from Seattle; you can ask my cab driver if you don’t believe me. The event was very enjoyable, great crowd and for me I thoroughly enjoyed it even though it was mostly the financial types that are a major part of the HFTP membership. The week ended on a great high after HFTP concluded with Ted Horner and Lindsay Geyer pulling off an unbelievable surprise party for the retiring Jon Inge. It was absolutely amazing how many traveled a long ways to be there for the one night. Jon was absolutely surprised. Bob Bennett did a nice job recording on his phone the shocked Jon Inge walking into the room. If you would like to see the video then please click here. What a great way to end the week in Seattle East.
We are looking forward to heading up to New York City in a week to experience HX – The Hotel Experience which is the reinvented IHMRS. The event management is doing a lot of creative things this year especially with technology. As they say, the only constant in life is change and a change was needed for the New York Show. Hopefully good things will happen. If you make it to New York, please come to the Technology Innovation Center which is where we will be. It is always fun to meet people face to face. Hospitality Upgrade always does a dinner on Monday night in New York so come by and let us know if you would like to join us. After New York it is one day in Washington, D.C. at The Hotel Network of Tomorrow conference. Then finally for November it will be off to London for Hospace which is an amazing one-day event. Of course it never seems to bother HOSPA who produces the event that it is once again happening on Thanksgiving Day. Let’s see if they serve turkey at their big dinner at the end of the show, which would be nice for those of us who are traveling over from the United States. Turkey in London? Who am I kidding.
The baseball World Series is going on right now. In February there will be a Super Bowl for pro football. It seems all sports to crown their champions have two teams or two players playing for their championship. Yes, I am a bit biased, but if you are near a television around 5 p.m. Eastern Time tomorrow you should watch the Breeders’ Cup Classic horse race. There will be 10 of the top horses in the world racing and only one winner. The buildup before the race is great, but nothing beats that moment when the gate opens and the race starts. I was at the Belmont Stakes this year to see American Pharaoh win the first Triple Crown in 37 years and my fingers are crossed he will cap off his amazing year with a win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. We can only hope.
Here now is the real reason we are here, Dan Phillips' review of what is happening in the technology world. I will see you at the end with this week’s attempt at you-know-what.

Introduction
I have to admit that I know little about cyberattacks and data security. Unfortunately, if you are a hotelier reading this you best not make the same statement. Here is a partial list of companies that were attacked just in 2014: Neiman Marcus, White Lodging, Michaels, PF Changs, Affinity Gaming, Albertsons, UPS, Dairy Queen, Goodwill, Home Depot, Jimmy Johns, JP Morgan Chase, Staples, Sony, Target, Yahoo, AT&T, eBay and Google. The average cost of such attacks doubled from 2013 to 2104, up to $8.6M per occurrence.
The director of the FBI, James Comey, said, “There are two kinds of companies in the United States. There are those who’ve been hacked…and those that don’t know they’ve been hacked.” Trump Hotels Collection just announced last month that it was attacked. On which side does your hotel company sit?

You-Know-What
And now for you-know-what…
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field. They advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. They also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.
Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear dung. Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear dung has little bells in it and smells like pepper.
